Past and Future Tense

PAST TENSE

Simple Past Tense: S+V2+O.

 

     This tense is used 

1. with the time adverbs:

yesterday, ago, before, in 2007, in the past, last week/month/year etc.

I went to Morang last month.

2.Past Continuous Tense: S+ was/were+V4+O.           Plural subject (We/You/They/ The boys)    -were                         Singular Subject (I/He/She/It/A boy)          - was

 

This tense is used 

1. with the past action which continued for some time

Mohan's father was working in the field.

1. for the long action if there are two actions in the sentence (generally joined by when/while)

When she knocked at the door, I was cooking in the kitchen.

3.Past Perfect Tense: S+had+V3+O.

 

     This tense is used 

1.     for the action which was completed or happened before the latter action 

            in the past 

          Before the policeman came, the thieves had run away.    

4.Past Perfect Continuous Tense: S+had+been+V4+O

      

This tense is used to express very long action which happened in the past. 

He had been living in Dhading for 20 years in the past.

 

                      Future Tense

Simple Future Tense: S+will/shall+V1+O.

 

This tense is used

1. to express simple future actions

I will write a story.

1. with these time adverbs:

         tomorrow, soon, shortly, in the future, in the coming days

         next week/month/year etc.

          He will go to Pokhara next month.

2.Future Continuous Tense: S+ will/shall+be+V4+O.

 

    This tense is used to express ongoing action in future

     I will be doing my homework at this time tomorrow.

3.Future Perfect Tense: S+ will/shall+ have+V3+O.

 

    This tense is used with by+future time

          By tomorrow/ by 2025AD etc

          By next year they will have completed the construction of the bridge.

4.Future Perfect Continuous Tense: S+will/shall +have+ been+ V4+O.

 

     This tense is used with

By/before + future time and for + period of time

By next year we will have been living in Kathmandu for ten years.
