Topics:How can I Improve Free Writing Skill of My Grade 8 Students' Through Writing Daily Diary ?

 

  1. Background of the study

I'm a teacher by profession. I've been in this profession for six years. At present, I am teaching in Shree Shanti Niketan Secondary School Rong Rural Municipality-3, Ilam. I teach English subject in class 8. English is an international language and is learnt around the world. In our country, it has the status of foreign language and learn our student as a second language. 

So, it is quite a interesting and challenging job to be an English teacher and teach English to students who may not have environment of learning or speaking English at their homes. Nepal, being a multi-lingual and multi-cultural country, our classes are full of students from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Students, who learn English as a second language, are not as competent as those whose native language is English. Being an English teacher, I have to face a lot of problems while teaching.

 

An Action research is a research that helps a teacher to find classroom teaching related problems and also helps to solve such problems applying various intervention one by another in a cyclical way. It is a practitioner-based research. In this action research I have done a research to find the problem of inefficiency of free writing of grade-8 students and have tried to reduce such problem. 

 

  1. Objectives of the Study

The main objectives of this study are

  • To find out the remedial solution for improving free writing of my grade eight students,
  • To examine the effectiveness of daily diary writing technique for developing free writing,
  • To share and reflect the findings in our workplace,

 

  1. Main Problem

As I have mentioned earlier, I teach English in class Eight. There are around twenty-five students in class eight. As writing is one of the important skills to express our thought and view, in our context especially focused skill, students must have good command in free writing as well. Present Basic Level English curriculum also expects to have competency of communicating in written English in personal, social and academic contexts. However, while teaching in grade 8, I found lack of competencies of free writing. Students are unable to write even a single paragraph in common and simple topics. It was a big problem for me.

 

4. Evidence/proof of the problem 

I started looking for the evidence of the problem i.e. my students’ incompetency in free writing. I found out that they couldn't write a single paragraph in common and already heard topics. The average learning achievement of students of grade eight is a bit low. Students felt difficulty in expressing their ideas, views and thoughts. So, I realized that I am not using proper techniques for developing writing skill of the students.

 

  1. Possible causes of the Problems

As I couldn't improve my students' competency in free writing despite of my continuous effort, I tried to find out the possible causes and found that:

  1. a) The students have lack of writing practice.
  2. b) They don't know the outline of writing various types of free writing tasks.
  3. c) Students are also found lack of sufficient amount of vocabulary appropriate to their grade.
  4. d) The students are hesitated to write as they feel free writing is above their capacity.
  5. e) The amount of exposures given to English language in their classroom is less.
    f) Unavailability of proper and interesting teaching learning materials. If available are also not used.
  6. g) Many teachers focus their teaching only how to make many students pass the exam. They use exam-oriented teaching methods and techniques.
  7. h) Less use of specific learner centered techniques.
  8. i) Lack of motivation in learning.

 

6.Selected causes

Although these innumerous causes of the aforementioned problems are found, I consider lack of writing practice the most important one. So, I thought learners should get ample opportunities to practice in writing inside as well as outside the classroom because language is learnt through practice.

 

  1. Intervening activities

I decided to follow the following steps in the classroom while teaching:

1) I asked them to write few lines daily on any topic, if they can't write much.

2) I provided them idea of outline of different kinds of free writing.

3) I gave them idea of process writing.

4) I asked them to maintain Daily Diary.

5) I brought variety in the teaching learning activities. I used different teaching learning materials like laptop projector to provide sample of writing, so that students could get ample exposure and could improve their writing skill.

6) I used some vocabulary build-up activities.

 

 

  1. Selected intervening action

Although there are a lot of intervening actions, I decided to select maintaining Daily Diary to eliminate the aforementioned problem.

 

9 .Action plan

The main aim of my action research was to enable to express their ideas, thoughts and views freely through writing. In order to achieve the intended objective as I mentioned earlier, I applied ‘Daily Diary writing' technique. I asked them to write Daily Diary and also asked to share with their friends so that they can write about their daily activities. I just monitored their doings, guided them with some samples, and supported them with necessary vocabs. I used the self-supported students for helping the teacher supported. I did these activities every day. When needed, I took help from my colleagues. The head teacher helped me by providing necessary teaching materials. The techniques I used in the classroom really helped me to increase my students learning outcomes. I took pretest and post test and find out the effectiveness of the techniques.

 

 

  1. Observation

 I observed and analyzed the learning outcomes of my students from pre- and post-tests and kept records. I asked some questions to students as well as the teachers of other subjects.

 

11) Reflection

At the end of this study, I experienced that, I was able to increase the learning outcomes of my students. Students gradually became successful to write daily diary through which they increased interest in writing. They gradually killed the fear of inability in free writing. They learnt some necessary vocabs. They started to feel that we also can express our ideas and activities through English. I found some kind of motivation of students towards writing. I also got encouraged to introduce various techniques in writing. Though the result from this research is not 100% to develop free writing I was delighted with this research and became ready to intervene next technique. I also decided to share it with other people like my colleagues. I requested head teacher to call a staff meeting.

 

12) Report Dissemination

I presented the report of my action research to the head teacher and the staffs and so on. In the meeting I shared my experience, how I was able to increase the learning outcomes.
