Title: How can I encourage my students to learn synonyms/ antonyms using mobile?
Problem
Teaching synonyms/antonyms in the classroom is one of the most frequent challenges. I dealt with while delivering my lessons. While teaching vocabulary, the learners feel most difficult how to find synonyms and antonyms in the given exercise. To teach vocabulary, they used text and sometimes dictionary but they couldn’t learn their synonyms and antonyms. If they had given exercise they feel monotonous, lazy and uninterested to do the exercise they were not motivated in the classroom.
Only they were expected to teacher finding synonyms and antonyms of the given words. As I worked on finding the reasons behind it, I came to the conclusion that my basic problems of finding synonyms/antonyms of the given words. I realized that my learners cannot motivate to learn only through textbook guessing. So I allowed them to use the mobile in the classroom for finding the synonyms/antonyms of the given words. As a result, the learners were more curious and motivated to learn synonyms/antonyms using mobile.
Therefore, the main objective of this action research is to encourage the learners learning synonyms/ antonyms by using mobile in my classroom.
What did I do?
I prepared action research implementation plan on the basis of my action research proposal. I had realized that giving definitions and using text only cannot enhance learning synonyms/antonyms properly. Therefore, I prepared lesson plans in which the learners engaged in mobile for finding synonyms/antonyms the basis of designed various activities.
First of all I presented a specific text asked the students to listen carefully. Then I divided the students in group 4 and asked them to work in group. I asked them to choose one group leader as a writer, presenter, manager and so on. Then I provided an exercise finding synonym words allowed them to use mobile. After finishing I asked them to exchange the exercise and discuss in each group. Another day I divided the whole class into two groups and gave them each group to different activities e.g. Group A finding synonyms and Group B antonyms in the given words using mobile. And then design a game activities running to the board. They had equally provided the words to find synonyms/antonyms suddenly run to the board write on the board.
During the group work I provided them feedback, guidance and encouragement. I also included pair work in my lesson plan. I prepared pair work like information gap activity, matching, choosing best alternate etc. In pair one of them found synonyms/antonyms another partner wrote on exercise book. Then they discussed on the whole class. I also used individual work for that I provided word card to each learners and asked them to find out their synonyms/antonyms using mobile individually. After finishing that asked them to play game like snap, mingling.
I observed the classroom involvement of the students. They actively took part in the activities. They were more interested to using mobile for finding synonyms/antonyms. During engagement in activities, I gave time allocation. In starting days they felt little bit difficult and had more time but later days they could be founded easily the synonyms/ antonyms of given words. I also prepared the questionnaire for their feeling to the activities in the classroom using mobile.
What did I learn?
Based on my activity, I learnt that use of mobile on teaching vocabulary i.e. synonyms/ antonyms plays vital role. By using mobile the learners could easily be learnt synonyms/ antonyms on a specific time. On the basis of observation, I learnt that they were more interested to use mobile and also interested playing game on mobile even in leisure period.
Mostly, the learners enjoyed the game activities. They actively participated on group work, pair work and so on. It was also learnt that using mobile reduced time learning as well. As observed it promoted the learners to learn synonyms/ antonyms and had been to sustain learning.
Some points that I learnt during my action research are as follows:
- Mobile helps the learners to learn vocabulary entertaining and easily. It promotes deep learning.
- It is also learnt the learners are engaged on mobile playing synonyms/ antonyms game in leisure period.
- It is not necessary turn on dictionary to find synonyms/ antonyms. Thus use of mobile saves time as well.
What I will do next?
Using mobile in teaching synonyms/antonyms helped me to bring a significant change in my way of teaching vocabulary. I will share this idea to my colleagues. I will tell them that it is one of the easiest and best techniques to teach synonyms/ antonyms. If we teach vocabulary using learning will be gone to deep learning. I will frequently apply teaching games, group work, pair work, individual work using mobile while teaching vocabulary in my class that enhance learning to my students. It will also develop my profession.
