ACTION RESEARCH
'Problems on Reading Simple English Text of Six-Graders in My School'
1.Background
Spending one and a half decade in Sankhuwasabha District as an English teacher in lower secondary level, I came here in Sijuwa Secondary School in 2075 B.S. The School | worked in the past and the present one are different in many aspects. There were some different problems that I faced in the first one during 15 years teaching in the hill and those were handled there in those circumstances.
Needless to say, there are a lot of problems in teaching English language in our community schools of our country. Many of them are of similar types and some are specific in particular places. It means some reasons of some problems vary from place to place. Here, the problems mentioned as the topic is dealt differently.
My present-time school, Shree Sijuwa Secondary School, Ratuwamai-7, Morang has a mixed community of students. The students belong to Rajbanshi (different from the Rajbanshi's of KTM), Tajpuriya, Santhal (satar), Sutihar, Yadav, Mochi (Terai Dalit), Rishidev (Mushahar), Gangai, Guri (fishing is their traditional professional), Shah, Teli, Haluwai, Majhi community. All these are non-Nepali speaking community. These cover 95 percent of total student number. Only five percent of students speak Nepali as their mother tongue. Many of those non-Nepali Speaking students belong to poor and uneducated family. Most parents are illiterate. So, they are not capable to guide their children at home. A great number of these parents are landless. They are agro-labours and have to work hard in other's farm for their livelihood. They are camp ell to send their children to work for money instead to school for education.
2.Rationale of study
As an English teacher, I worked hard in classroom. I focus my students in all four skills. But, they fail to achieve the targeted purposes. When I observed them, I found many of my students in grade six extremely weak in reading English text. A large number of students were incapable of reading simple words. Reading texts are given for comprehension. If one can't read the text properly, he/she can't comprehend the gist. So, it was not fruitful to complete the course merely. Instead, I conducted this research so that I could find the problems behind them and treat them properly.
3.Purpose of study
This research was held for the following purposes.
i.To find out the root cause of the problem.
ii.To explore the good relation between student teacher and guardian-teacher.
iii.To find out the way of reducing the students weaknesses in the abovementioned problem.
4.Reasons of the problem
To solve the problem, why they can't read even the simple text, I most know the inner reason behind the problem. When I pursued the problem profoundly, I interacted with the students, their guardians and my fellow teachers. With all those works that I concluded the reasons behind the problems are as follows:
i.Many of the students are from different schools. It means they assembled here from their previous school after completing primary education. So, their learning background was not the same.
ii.They hadn't done well in English in the previous grades.
iii. They have a little chance to give time for study in house.
iv.They weren't treated properly with their problems.
v.Reading practices weren't done much.
vi.The current pandemic of COVID has influenced in the mentality and teaching learning process of students.
5.Limitation of study
This study was done in the different and specific situation of Sijuwa Secondary School. So, it mayn't be applicable for others.
6.Duration of study
It was conducted in grade six from 2nd Magh of 2077 B.S. to 15 of the month.
7.Hypothesis of solution
For increasing the level of students in reading. I determined some measures. The remedies that I fixed for the treatment were as follows:
i.Their past experience and knowledge must be examined.
ii.They must get adequate and frequent opportunities for reading in the direct guidance of teacher.
iii.Reading skills can be improved starting with simple texts.
8.Implementation
After confirming my plans, I put those into operation.
i.Firstly, I chose a text, asked them to read and observed their performance.
ii.Observing their performance, I knew that they spelled out the words instead of pronouncing the word. It was due to the lacking of pronunciation skill of English words. So, I wrote a simple text comprising of three sentences of the most common words. I read out the words, then sentence, time and again. They watched and followed the process. After some time, they were able to read the sentences.
iii. Next, I wrote another text which included nearly the same words but the sentences were different. I, then, asked them to read. Many of them read text properly.
iv.The process was carried out for two weeks. After their four or five attempts, wrote some new words with the previously-used ones. Ninety per cent above could read the words they knew before. New words were introduced them gradually.
9.Findings and Analysis
After fifteen days, I examined them again. I selected them a passage from their text book. The text was 'the Story of the Grass-cutter'. The words they were familiar with were read by the most. The new and difficult words were remained untreated. They would be treated in another way. But they utilized their previous experiences to read the text. The students who could read the text could be grouped like this:
i.13 per cent of the students could read text excluding difficult new words.
ii.73 per cent could read/pronounce the 60 per cent words.
iii. 8 per cent of the students covered more than 30 percent text.
iv.6 per cent of the students could complete less than 30 per cent texts.
10.Reflection and Feedback
After observing the performance, it can be said that the outcomes of the study has been fruitful. They have eager to read and passion for reading. When the students are encouraged, they are willing for more reading. Now the pronunciation and reading capability has risen up.
But again, the targeted purpose is not achieved. A lot of numbers of students need much help and guidance. So, the next cycle must be carried out.
11.Replan/Next cycle
A determined teacher is always hopeful. He/she always works for betterment. So, to get better learning achievement, | conducted the process for comparatively weak students in reading.
12 Conclusion
In the process of teaching and learning a teacher confronts various problems. If he/she faces them well, he/she can solve them as well. The above mentioned problem was also minimized with an effort. Likewise, when the new problem is seen, it will be overcome with continuous and collective support.
