111. My Programme After Examination
For the last few months I have been passing through very busy days. The specter of examination always haunts me. Very soon the examination will be over. What
relief I shall have after the examination! I shall be free from all duties. I shall have a long vacation. I have a good programme for the vacation.
I propose to do nothing for the first few days. A short space of idleness after months of hard labour is pleasing. Hence I will drink the cup of idleness to the lees. I will do nothing but enjoy the luxury of laziness. I will spend my time in idle gossips and fruitless games. But such idle life can have pleasure only for a short period. Excess of everything is bad and so excessive indulgence in idleness is demoralizing. So after a short relaxation I must do something worth doing. I propose to have a pleasant excursion during the vacation. So I have a mind to spend a few weeks at some lake-side resort. Pokhara, may be a suitable place of choice.
On returning from the excursion, I will undertake some social and cultural work in my village. There have been constant demands on me for such work. I will have ainple time and opportunity to meet them after the examination. I propose to begin with the organization of a committee of social and cultural workers. The first thing I have in mind. is put the village library on sound footing. For this money is necessary. We will collect funds by collection grain from farmers. We will make close contact with the masses. Then attempt will be made to make library a living organ of the society. So long attention has been paid to equip the library with fictions and dramas. But these alone are not sufficient. We will have to pay greater attention to the economy and politics of the country. We will have to learn about the new civilizations that are growing up in Russia and China. We will have to learn about the popular sciences and Technologies that are making miracles in the world, Without proper appreciation of these things, we cannot understand the problems of today.
Next I propose to organize a campaign against illiteracy: everywhere there is a keen desire for learning. We will establish night schools for men and afternoon schools for women. There we shall teach them not only to read and write, we shall also give them talks on things that are happening in our country. We shall tell them about conditions of life abroad. We shall help them to understand their problems and find out their solutions. In short, we shall try to make them intelligent citizens of a great democracy.
The sanitary condition of rural people is far from satisfactory. They neglect the elementary principles of hygiene and sanitation. We shall educate them in those principles. Once they are convinced of the importance of health and sanitation, they will come out in support of them practically. Then again we will try to make their monotonous life pleasant. We will give them healthy entertainment. All those who can act, sing, recite or excel in mimicry or pantomime, will be invited to make their contributions. Such are my programmes for the days after my examination.
