The elephant is the largest among the quadrupeds. It has a huge body. Its eyes are small and neck is short. Its ears are very large. It has a trunk seven to eight feet long. The trunk serves the purpose of hands and nose. Male elephant have tusks. Its sense of hearing is very keen.

 

It is an intelligent and at the same time industrious animal. The tame elephant is obedient and docile. It becomes attacked to its master. It is always ready to fake revenge on its enemy. It eats the leaves and branches of trees, grass, straw, etc. They live in herds. They are Tond of water. They like sweet sugarcane. Elephants are found in the forests of India, Burma, Ceylon, Siam and Africa. There are white elephant in Siam and Burma.

 

Elephants are used for carrying heavy loads. In Burma they draw huge logs of wood. They are useful in clearing wood.Formerly they were used in wars. They perform various feats in circus. Ivory is obtained from the tusks of the elephant . Many valuable and fancy goods are made of the  tusks. Due to development of modern roads and  automobiles, the importance of elephant is decreasing.
